The history connecting Ruthin and King Arthur is fascinating:
Legend states that King Arthur came to blows with Huail, a local chief over one of the Kings mistresses, resulting in King Arthur becoming wounded in the knee. The pair agreed to be civil so long as the incident was not mentioned again. However when King Arthur disguised himself for a romantic liaison with another mistress at Ruthin his old adversary, Huail, recognized and ridiculed him. King Arthur was outraged and immediately had Huail executed on a stone block which is now displayed in Ruthin Town Square.
Ruthin Castle is one of precious few Welsh castles forming the notoriously fearsome ‘iron ring' created more than 700 years ago and is packed full of magical legends just waiting to be cherished and enjoyed by many. Today's castle was built for King Edward I and its life to the present day has involved kings, queens, nobility and some thrilling mediaeval adventures along the way. This package incorporates the fortified curtain walls of Ruthin Castle, stretching between the main corner towers and facing the castle moats, these great walls have witnessed and encompassed intense love, romance and at times, frenzied passion. One of the more notorious castle owners King Henry VIII granted the castle's use to his illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy, 1st Duke of Richmond and Somerset, 1st Earl of Nottingham. A product from his affair with teenage mistress Elizabeth Blount, Henry Fitzroy was the only illegitimate child acknowledged by Henry VIII.

During centuries of epic battles and sieges, movement between the castle towers and the underground chambers and dungeons was harried and furtive through a small but important network of hidden, subterranean stone-lined tunnels. These were the supply routes, the reinforcement routes…and in the last resort, the frantic escape routes. Legend has it that when Wales was under English rule,Reginald de Grey of Ruthin Castle led a large army from the tunnels and baileys of the castle and rapidly quelled the Welsh garrison when it rose up against its oppressors. 5,000 strong, Reginald's army fiercely conquered further uprisings during the Madoc Revolt protecting English townsfolk from the defiant locals.
Treason & Treachery

Down forbidding dark stone stairways and tunnels, lie the menacing and sinister dungeons and chambers and worse, a deep dark pit where prisoners were starved and tortured. The core of the castle, these walls no doubt witnessed centuries of macabre and unspeakable deeds.
The first known resident of Ruthin Castle, Dafydd ap Gruffudd was awarded the castle for his treacherous support of invading King Edward I. In a sinister twist of fate, Dafydd ap Gruffyd was himself executed for High Treason less than a year after becoming Prince of Wales and the last independent ruler of Wales. In brutal custom he was hung, drawn and quartered and his head ‘spiked atop the Tower of London' as a warning to others!
