Prostate Cancer Survivor Takes on Challenge

(Release) Real Men Charities, Inc. has named Ranoule Tatum, as the new Manager of Men's Health Programming. With health statistics demonstrating that the percentage of African American men being diagnosed with prostate cancer is increasing, Real Men Charities, Inc. believes that Mr. Tatum can move this new approach forward and continue its active engagement of outreach, education and prostate cancer screenings in Chicago and surrounding areas in 2010.

Ranoule Tatum was diagnosed with prostate cancer nearly six years ago. As a single father with two daughters, he felt it was truly a blessing to have had his cancer detected early. He lives by the slogan, "early detection is a man's best protection." Until 2003 Tatum had never been screened for prostate cancer - a simple blood test to checks the (PSA) Prostate Specific Antigen level, which gives important information about the prostate gland.

He has been on a mission, working independently and with Real Men Charities' Prostate Cancer Awareness efforts since June 2004, to educate and inspire men to get tested at community health fairs, religious meetings and through radio and TV interviews. He helped launch the Real Men Charities Chicago "50 Hoops for Prostate Cancer" program, screening 101 men in a single day and has worked with two primary prostate cancer education and support groups Real Men Charities and US TOO. Real Men Charities, Inc. is the presents the IDPH Health & Wellness Zone at Real Men Cook where visitor were introduced to nutrients from food, including the "Real Men Antioxidant Collard Green Salad," fish and other fresh fruits and vegetables are served annually. This year at Real Men Cook 196 men were screened for prostate cancer, thanks to a partnership with Provident Hospital and the Chicago Black Nurses Association.

Mr. Tatum is grateful for the opportunity to assume a leadership role in Real Men Charities, Inc strategies for 2010 and speaks highly of the organization's track record of reaching thousands of men and families through effective media campaigns, educating the public and causing 600 men to be screened each year for the past two years thanks to funding from the Illinois Department of Public Health and partners including Provident Hospital. Real Men Charities will continue to take an innovative approach to prostate outreach, education and screenings with man to man messaging and by focusing on alliance-building with advocacy groups that have similar missions, program goals and objectives to promote health and lifestyle changes.

Mr. Tatum has been charged with implementing the mandate to expand the successful "Gimme Five" prostate cancer campaign. The new RMC campaign, "Gimme Five...Survive, and Stay Alive!" has a focus of five new innovative approaches to prostate outreach, education and screenings:

· Enlist prostate cancer survivors on the awareness team to represent campaign

· Mobilize cancer survivors to distribute ribbons, wristbands "conversation starters" to increase discussions around prostate cancer early detection

· Focus on food sampling, nutrition and diet to fight all cancers including prostate cancer

· Launch a new media, radio and TV campaign, and distribute DVDs with survivor and family testimonials

· Celebrate the power of early detection, survival and family empowerment focused on increasing life expectancy

To move this new approach forward, Real Men Charities, Inc., will focus its efforts in the "food desert" areas of three Chicago communities, Englewood , Roseland and Austin. A partnership with The Greater Chicago Food Depository, The Englewood Network, The Greater Roseland West Pullman Food Network (food advocacy and distribution agencies serving these communities) in conjunction with Black Wall Street, Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and The Westside Ministers Coalition will be created. Partnerships with Provident Hospital , Roseland Hospital , University of Chicago Medical Center, Jackson Park Hospital , Loretto Hospital , the American Kidney Fund and the Good Greens Initiative with the USDA will also be fostered and continued.
