The Christmas holidays are getting closer by the day and a large number of people will have already started their Christmas shopping in an attempt to beat the rush. Even though we all enjoy Christmas, mainly due to the silly amount of food we eat and the gifts we receive, however, Christmas isn't a good time for the environment.
To accompany the obscene amount of food and gifts we end up buying also comes a massive number of packaging. The actual products inside the wrappings can have a negative effect on the environment, particularly the creation of the products.
Never fear though, for those that try to be as eco-friendly as possible, there is a number of things that you can do to try and make your Christmas less damaging to the environment.
Buying gifts for your various relatives is a tricky task in itself, but trying to think of eco gift ideas is even harder. To give you some ideas, here are some great gifts ideas.
With everyone having a heightened awareness for the environment, a huge amount of eco-friendly and recycled gifts have sprung up. Obviously laundry baskets or recycled tableware are not great as Christmas gifts, however, there are many others that would be perfect. For everyone, from gardeners to brandy drinkers, there are gifts such as recycled gardening tools or recycled brandy glasses that make great Christmas gifts.
As for gifts for children, unfortunately there are not many eco gifts out there for older kids. However, if you have younger children then you should be able to find some great gifts along the lines of fair trade soft toys or solar powered wooden toys.

The last thing you can do to try and help the environment comes just before Christmas day, the gift wrapping. Although you may believe that you can't do much about that, unless you don't wrap the presents at all. However, there is. Being made from paper, wrapping paper is so simple to recycle, because of this, many retailers are now selling recycled wrapping paper. Also, after the big day, make sure you recycle all your wrapping paper to finish the job off.
