Gwendolyn Drake:

Running for State Representative of 5th District

For a combined 38 years, I have proudly lived, worked and worshipped in the 5th Legislative District.

Over the course of that time--more often in recent years-- I have come to recognize the need for positive change in the 5th District. I am running for State Representative because I believe I can deliver the critical changes needed while providing the residents of the 5th district with someone who is visible and accessible to all, and who would be an effective and viable voice in Springfield.

Public service is a part of who I am. I began my career as an attorney, serving as an Investigator with the U.S. Department of Labor protecting the benefits of hardworking people. I have also served as Assistant Counsel to the Speaker of The Illinois House of Representatives, where I gained valuable experience through active participation in the legislative process. As a Prosecuting Attorney in the Child Support Enforcement Division of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, I fought to ensure that all children are properly provided for. Advocating for those in need has been at the forefront of both my professional and personal life.

The 5th District is one of the most diverse districts in Illinois. More than ever, we need leadership in Springfield that speaks on behalf of all its residents. During these challenging economic times, we need a Representative who isn’t afraid to stand up against the broken policies of the past and provide our district with the best chance possible at implementing a fresh new vision that best addresses the issues affecting our lives the most.

Throughout my campaign, I have met hundreds of people who call the 5th district home. From Woodlawn to the Loop, from Chinatown to Old Town, they share many of the same concerns. They want the right to affordable housing for their family, to be able to receive that new home loan to which their life’s efforts has justly entitled them.

They want to be able to safely send their children to school every day where they can receive the best education possible while preparing them for college. They want a public transportation system that will always be there for them and get them to work on time. They want a property tax policy that recognizes fluctuations in the housing market and provides real relief.

And they want honest representation that serves THEM, and not the special interests and political payback policies that have stained our state government for far too long.

We have entered a new decade. It is a decade filled with hope and optimism for the future. Working together, I know that we can work to ensure that we achieve the quality of life we all seek and deserve for ourselves and for our families.
